- A Man Once Threw Away Thousands of Bitcoins
In 2013 a man named James Howells of Wales, an IT worker, had an old hard drive that contained more than 7,500 bitcoins in his digital wallet. He didn’t foresee a future for the currency and he had mined them himself as a hobby. As such, he decided to throw the hard drive away, losing out on millions of dollars today.
As the value of Bitcoin skyrocketed in the following years, Howells realized the magnitude of his mistake. The hard drive containing the bitcoins ended up in a landfill site in Newport, Wales. Despite numerous attempts to locate the drive, including offering to donate a portion of the recovered bitcoins to charity, Howells has been unable to retrieve it. The incident serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of securely storing digital assets and the potential consequences of losing access to valuable cryptocurrencies.
